Work ongoing.
The results of intensive fieldwork by Mid Sussex Field Archaeology Unit, the University of Sussex and our group have still to be fully analysed.
Prehistoric
Field walking has produced a scatter of Palaeolithic flints and a substantial spread of other prehistoric humanly-struck flints and a small number of prehistoric pot sherds.
Romano-British
A large quantity of Romano-British building material and pottery was found.
As a result of these discoveries, seven archaeological trial-trenches were excavated within the field. These cuttings exposed the features noted below.
Evidence for a collapsed Roman building of as yet uncertain function.
The remains of a previously unrecorded Roman road. Also traced in Upper Cuckington Field (B1245) and Butt Field (B1267).
Some deeply buried timbers radio-carbon dated to later 3rd to early 5th century AD (pers. comm. Rob Wallace)
Anglo-Saxon
A possible Saxon strap-end
Medieval
Some early Medieval ceramic.
Method: Field walking using 20 m grid. Excavation undertaken by Rob Wallace of The University of Sussex as part of the Barcombe Roman Villa project.
