The farm name is derived from the Bunce family, owners in the 17th-18th century. The name occurs in parish registers from 1667.The rental of 1565 records a tenement called Bremes and Hoppers valued at 7s 0d, although it is impossible to reconcile the acreage attributed to the tenement, this land, together with the adjoining land owned by James Slater in 1840 (see TA 45), may represent that early tenement. Slater's land was said to be 'called Breens' in 1734. Walter Brene is recorded living in Barcombe in 1327 and 1332 and he was probably living at this tenement. |
