Date

18/1/04

Name TA 1840 Caveridge Shaw - 1911 OS Charts Wood
TA field no. TA 247
Activity Coppice stool and standard recording.
Report

Hornbeam coppice with oak standards. Primrose, bluebell and other indicators of ancient woodland.

Substantial internal bank with double pole oaks suggests earlier arrangement of boundaries.

Recording the boundary bank Chart's Wood.

The bank appears to mark the boundary between two copyhold tenements of the manor of Balneath; Bates Croft and Furzeley held, in 1840, by Sir Charles Forster Goring and William Westwood respectively. Furzeley, to the west of the bank, was the older tenement, Bates Croft was granted to Ninian (Nenyon) Masters in 1721.
