The parish of Barcombe originally extended to include the manor of Balneath and adjoining land now in the parish of Chailey. The original grant of a virgate, an antique land measurement variable in extent according to the quality of the land but usually approximately 20 acres, in this case 24 acres, does not mention a dwelling. Although the manorial records do not record a dwelling before 1766, the visible timber-frame of Furzeley Farmhouse is typical of the construction methods of the second half of the 17th century, suggesting that the Calchin family may have constructed the present house. The construction of Markstakes Cottage, sometime before 1840, also appears to be unrecorded. The field names kiln field and brickyard field attest to the importance of brick making in the area well before the modern works at Chailey were developed. |
