A tenement of the manor of Balneath lying partly in Chailey and partly in Barcombe. In 1809 it was described as 2 acres in Barcombe and Chailey and by 1840 it was partitioned Barcombe/Chailey. Hundred acres, cottage and 26 perches to Richard Pannett - by apportionment copy 2d (18). As William Pannett appears as owner in Barcombe in 1840 that portion of the land must have remained in the larger part valued at 4d. The description of the tenement as the Hundred Acres is a humorous one frequently used to describe small fields. The varied assessments of the size of the holding suggest that there was a degree of uncertainty about the actual position of the boundaries. |
