One of a group of tenements in Barcombe held of the manor of Rodmell. Like many other great Saxon estates in Sussex Rodmell held significant tracts of land lying detached from the manorial centre. Vuggles Farm, Spithurst House, Burtenshaw's Farm and these cottages and the land called Lakers, lying to the east, were all held of the manor of Rodmell. Originally recorded in the manor court as a piece of land, by 1610 the original cottage had been built. The plot, long and narrow and adjacent to the road, is typical of an enclosure from manorial waste. Gabriel Best owned the property for a significant part of the 19th century and he was probably the owner who undertook the extensions and improvements at that time. Best, who was a Chailey shopkeeper, married Elizabeth Adams who owned several tenements at Barcombe Cross in 1840. Elizabeth herself owned a shop and they were probably instrumental in the development of the original village shop. |
