P113/31/1 Knowlands Farm, wood, and land

This large tenement of the manor of Houndean is, like many freehold tenements, ill recorded in the manor court books. Indeed information for Knowlands is particularly sparse. What is clear is that the tenement was in the hands of the Goring family, possibly without a break, from c1600 to after 1840 when our detailed study ends. The reference in the rental to another owner, Mrs Ade, in 1825 is puzzling. She may have been a leasehold tenant or possibly related to the Goring family. The claim that at least part of Knowlands was tithe free suggests that it may have been held by a religious house before the dissolution. It may be significant that a place called 'Knolland', former Lewes Priory land, was leased out immediately after the dissolution. The location of that 'Knolland' is unknown but it is possible that it was acquired by a new owner who annexed to his manor of Houndean and then leased it to George Goring.

The Gorings did not live at Knowlands and records of the tenants are equally sparse until the earliest surviving land tax records for this area begin in 1780. One stray early land tax record (1703) survives for Barcombe and appears to name tenants rather than owners of the properties; then John Carpenter was at Knowlands. The Carpenter family association with the property may have been long standing, certainly one of the family was the tenant in 1737.

The Goring family the manor of Balneath from 1557 until c1900, to which this land was added from at least the early 17th century. (see P113/31 TA 303).
