P113/53 2007 Sutton Hall, Beaks Farm, Bradness, Vuggles and land. Keepers Cottage lost

This part of his large estate was inherited by Captain Thomas Richardson from his aunt Mary Richardson (née Margesson). The tenements were united into the estate by the Stiles and then by the Margesson family of West Sussex in the 18th and early 19th century. They were never resident on the estate. The new house, then named Sutton Hurst, was built by Thomas Richardson in 1836 (32).

A map c1830-1836 records the names Bradness Green and Upper and Lower Bradness not far south of the Vuggles boundary which suggests the Bradness holding was extensive, but the messuage (dwelling) has not been identified.

Coppards Farm (now Bradness), is in origin a fine medieval house with substantial 17th century additions which can possibly be attributed to the Delves family. It appears to have been the principal messuage (dwelling) associated with the early tenement, later partitioned, called Worgers. The original Beaks farmhouse may have been of some antiquity, but it has now been replaced with a modern farmhouse. Keepers Cottage has also been lost but photographs suggest that it may have dated from the 18th century. None of the tenement boundaries can be securely identified, the field numbers given below only suggest their location.

Four messuages (dwellings) can be identified in the manorial tenements. Of the present houses only Coppards Farm (Bradness) and Vuggles are of sufficient antiquity to be associated with those early dwellings.

In 1565 many of these tenements were owned as part of a substantial estate by Thomas Michelbourne and his wife Alice (30).
