This tenement, identified in the land tax records as part of Marvell Common, was held of the manor of Warningore. Marvell was one of the commons in the manor of Barcombe that was enclosed by agreement in 1574 (23). That this part of the common was a freehold held of Warningore suggests that both manors had an interest in this valuable area of brookland. The tenement was already held by the Shirley family of Isfield in 1579 when it was said to be held of the Queen (59). That suggests the possibility that it was formerly held by a religious house and had remained in the hands of the crown. How it eventually became associated with Warningore has not been established. The name is a simplex form of the common Old English element hamm, in this case identifying a water meadow. In 1579 the land was described as 'Eastmarvell or East Wood Great Eyes or Little Eyes in Barcombe' and was said to contain 46 acres. The term 'eye' is derived from early English eg an island which perfectly describes the situation of the meadows enclosed between the Longford Stream, the river Ouse and other waterways. |
