Spithurst House TA 550

The byname Spithurst can be associated with people dwelling in Barcombe from 1297-1332. Excavation revealed medieval pottery in the garden of Spithurst House which confirmed that there was almost certainly a house on the site at that time. However, there was no evidence for continuity of settlement on the site. The manorial court books record only a barn on the site in 1541 and it was demolished in 1636. Because of the sparse records of freehold tenancies the next note of a dwelling is that recorded on the tithe map of 1839/40.
