This outlying holding of the manor of Rodmell adjoins Spithurst House which was also held of Rodmell. The name Westlands, now forgotten, and other field names were an essential element that allowed the tenement to be identified. A late 18th century map was made for the sale of land at Barcombe Cross and Westlands. The northern part of the map showing Westlands had been cut off but the name Westlands and the list of the fields which constituted the holding survived. The field names could be associated with names recorded as part of what is now Burtenshaw Farm in 1840 (41). Free tenements are only intermittently recorded in the manor courts so the descent of the property is sketchy. Despite the late record of his ownership in the court books the property was probably purchased by Richardson from Holroyd in 1836. The house appears to date from the latter part of the 17th century or the early part of the 18th century. That suggests the existing building could have been built by the Attree family but without doubt there would have been an earlier house on the site. The manorial record of Richardson's death reveals an amusing sidelight on the registering of right to heriot. The lawyers representing the lord of the manor of Rodmell did not arrive in time to claim any of his beasts as heriot because the lawyers representing other manorial lords had got there first! For the rest of Richardson's extensive estate see P113/53, TA 90; P113/53/1, TA 428; P113/53/2, TA 658; P113/53/4, TA 715. |
