P113/62 Cottage at St Helena, now lost, and adjoining land

Samuel Hyde Smart was a Lewes miller working the public subscription mill in Pipe Passage which was later moved to a site near Lewes prison. The cottage at St Helena was built between 1840 and 1873/4. The name St Helena is a jocular reference to a distant place, in this instance undoubtedly referring to Napoleon's exile at St Helena.
