These tenements were probably merged by <1662, as is often the case with manorial records detailed information for the freehold tenement is lacking. The land lies to the east of the river Ouse, canalised in the last decade of the 18th century. The parish boundary lies on the Iron River suggesting that earlier that was perceived as the main stream. Thomas Richardson purchased this land in 1832 while he was still living in Lewes, before he built Sutton Hurst; it was his first land purchase after inheriting the estate The high quit rent reflects the importance of good meadow land in animal husbandry. The name Monkton Brooks suggests that part of the land may have been held by a monastic house, possibly Lewes Priory. For the rest of Richardson's extensive estate see P113/53, TA 90; P113/53/1, TA 428; P113/53/3, TA 560; P113/53/4, TA 715. |
