The site of the pub and adjoining land was manorial demesne named Rail Field in the early 18th century (29). In 1724 it was sold with Butcher's Field to Christopher Mansel (69). By 1840 Butcher's Field was owned by Thomas Richardson as part of P113/53/4 (TA586-589, 643) The pub name implies that the development of the property as a public house coincided with the development of the nearby Ouse navigation in the final decade of the 18th century. James Funnell was the tenant of both the inn and the land in 1840. |
