A map dated 1779 shows a substantial house, probably timber- framed and possibly early in origin, adjacent to the north-eastern corner of Cheales Mead. The house was lost by 1840. Fieldwork in the neighbouring fields demonstrates that there was substantial use of the area, probably for arable farming, from the 12th to the 19th century suggesting the possibility that the house could have been medieval in origin. Documentary work also suggests that there were originally more dwellings in the area which were lost by 1840. However definitive evidence for the date of the house depicted on the maps is lacking. |
