Delves Farm TA 705

Delves Farm is tile hung above brick with a tiled roof half-hipped at each end and a central multi-flue stack. There is a rear wing on the north side with a wrap round lean-to to the north and west, plus a northern stack. Stone plaques flank the porch with AS 27 and AS 28 (Sutton Hall estate numbers - owner from 1916-1942 Adela Shenstone). In use as two dwellings, Delves farm house and Constables cottage in 1840.

The original house was of three bays with a narrower central bay containing the chimney stack with back to back hearths at ground and first floor. There was a cooking hearth on the ground floor east side with evidence for spit-jack fixing. Stairs ascend from the ground floor to the attic on the south side of the chimney stack with a pyramid finial to the first floor. There is evidence for a first floor doorway on the east end wall. The roof over the original house is of clasped side-purlins with queen struts (moved to improve access). The rear wing roof has staggered butt-purlins with butt rafters. The northern chimney stack serves a hearth and oven on the north and a first floor hearth on the south.

The original build was a baffle entry house built with a chimney stack with heating at two levels and usable space at three levels. The original 'kitchen' was at the eastern end above which was a chamber apparently accessible externally.

The type of roof, the decorative details on the girders, the high set joists, suggesting plastered ceilings and the stair finial all indicate a date of c1590-1610.

The staggered butt-purlin roof of the rear wing, which provided an alternative kitchen, places it as an addition of 1650 at the earliest.

These notes have been compiled from survey reports prepared by Dr Annabelle Hughes. The original reports have been deposited in the Sussex Archaeological Society Library, Barbican House, Lewes, where they can be consulted by researchers.
