In 1788 the major tenement called Pakins and Kneales, on the site of what is now Banks Farm, was settled on Eleanor Holroyd, wife of George Holroyd, by her father John Feist as part of her marriage settlement. It was surrendered to their son John Holroyd in 1802. He then set about purchasing other land in Barcombe to form the estate associated with Barcombe Place. Two other major manorial tenements, originally in different ownership, were merged with Pakins and Kneales to create what is now Banks Farm. One, Pakins, appears to have been sited on what is now the farmyard adjacent to Banks Farm (TA 730) and the other, Chantlers, may be associated with the site, now lost, but revealed by archaeological fieldwork, in the field called The Hawkins (TA 737). Because of the coincidence of the name it is worthy of note here that by 1851 a James Feist was the tenant farmer at Banks Farm, which was then owned by George Grantham. |
