P113/58/1 2007 Scobell's and adjoining land

One of the early recorded manorial tenements described in 1565 as Coppernetts halfyard and ferling - copy 10s 0d.(note the field name Cobnets TA 741 which is derived from the original Coppernett) The tenement was enlarged by the acquisition of land from Whitehoad, one of the commons enclosed by agreement in 1574. The second element of the name Whitehoad suggests that the common was originally heathland. A map of 1820 shows a brick kiln in the highway before the house (see Old Maps). The kiln, by then out of use, was described in error as part of the property when sale particulars were drawn up in 1861. Grantham spotted the error and the description of the property was duly revised.
