This tenement is recorded early and the first dwelling on the site was 'recently built' in 1568. Dominic Lewes had raised a mortgage of £18 on the land, presumably to build the house. The mortgage was conditional on payment of £18 'at the north door of the church of Barcombe on 20 April, 1575'. The low quit rent due on the early tenement reflects the unchanging nature of the manorial rents once they had been fixed while the higher rents charged for the comparatively small new land grants demonstrate the higher values of a later date. |
