As so often in Barcombe these tenements were grants made from the manorial waste; typically long narrow strips alongside a road. A map of Balneath and Knowlands dated 1737 depicts 'John Carpenter's house'. John Carpenter was the owner, but as a substantial farmer would not have lived in the house. In the 19th century the cottages appear to have been leased to the parish as a poor house, some land at the northern end of the plot was sold and the forge developed on the site. An early 20th century postcard shows the timber-framed buildings with children playing in the road in front. |
