P113/56 2007 Camois Court, Camois Court Farm, Half Yard Farm and land

At Barcombe Cross:

Barcombe School, house in School Field

Recreation ground at Barcombe Cross

Land lost to railway (Soal Field TA 884)

This land represents a part (moiety) of the demesne lands of the manor of Camois Court and, as such, the descent is not recorded in the manor court. Camois Court was formed by partition of the manor of Barcombe and was originally, like the principal manor, identified as Barcombe (Bercamp). The earliest record dated 1198 identifies the manor in the hands of Maud de Bercamp, her name suggesting that she probably lived at her manor. The manor descended to the Camoys family in the early-14th century but was not identified in documents as Camoys Court until the mid-15th century after the tenure had passed out of their hands. It eventually passed to the Lewkenor family and when the male line failed was inherited by daughters. That inheritance led to a complex partition of interest in the manor (24). The complex moieties eventually resolved into two holdings, one of which was purchased by Thomas Medley in 1709 merging with their manor of Barcombe and passing eventually to the Earls of Liverpool. The other share, Camois Court Farm, descended to the Lucas family.

The land at Barcombe Cross cannot be identified with absolute certainty, however it is possibly a Camois manor tenement that had been in the hands of the Medley (later Liverpool) family which cannot otherwise be located.

The manor of Ote Hall is said to have had land at Barcombe and possibly Soal field is that holding. There are coincidental links with both the Godman family of Barcombe and Ditchling as well as Shadwell that suggest a possible association, but it has not been fully researched.

The lordship of the manor of Camois Court was purchased from Shadwell by Thomas Richardson in 1836 and in 1866 George Grantham it from Richardson.
