This is one of several areas of land owned by John Constable, a builder, in 1840. His land was held of three manors Barcombe, Camoys Court and Allington. As well as his two larger landholdings at Spithurst and Barcombe Cross he acquired several small enclosures from the waste of the manor of Barcombe, typically long narrow roadside strips, of which the first of these tenements is an example. The cottage and land at Pound Corner was purchased from Handlye Farm in 1825. The original house on the site may have been one of the earlier dwellings, now lost, which constituted part of the Handlye tenement (see P113/58 TA 1127) Since 1840 the cottages depicted on the tithe map at Pound Corner have been replaced by the present properties. For the other land owned by Constable in 1840 see P113/19 TA 425; P113/19/2 TA 472; P113/19/3 TA 892 |
