This freehold tenement is badly recorded in the manor records. Although described in the manor records as a 12 acre tenement it was later associated with a larger freehold tenement of Camois Court at Leweslands (P113/1/1 TA 1094). Although the association of the two holdings is obscure earlier they were both owned by the Shirley family or their successors. John Constable purchased this land in 1836 from John Cheesman. The Old Forge is a remarkable survival of a medieval house in the heart of the village. For the other land owned by Constable in 1840 see P113/19 TA 425; P113/19/1 TA 1104, 873 ; P113/19/2 TA 472 |
