Barcombe Cross 1873 and 1899.
ESRO OS 25" 40/14

Contrary to popular belief our research has demonstrated that Barcombe Cross was always a relatively concentrated centre of settlement within the parish. However, the centre here developed particularly dramatically in the late 19th early 20th century. The ordnance maps demonstrate that development very well.

The most notable difference is clearly the new railway line with the station at Barcombe Cross. Some cottages were replaced with rather more monumental buildings, the Grange and Gladstone Buildings for example. The mission hall, now the church of St Francis of Assisi, had been built and the earlier non-conformist chapel lost. The Grantham family of Barcombe Place and Balneath purchased the small tenements as they came on the market and were responsible for much of the development.
