The gradual fragmentation of the tenements in and around Barcombe Cross is well represented by the development of this tenement. This row of cottages were in multiple ownership in 1840 and the omission of some data from the tithe map as well as changes made since 1840 makes certain identification of individual properties difficult. Like other dwellings in and around Barcombe Cross and Spithurst this cottage and the others associated at that time appear to have served as poor houses for the parish from 1795-1824. By 1840 James Cripps Cox also owned the houses now known as Old Thatch, Tudor Cottages and Attrees (see P113/20/1 TA 909) |
