Landgirls looking in the window of Ballard's Shop 1939-45 war. Painting by Marjorie Hoare.
Reproduced from the Barcombe WI book by kind permission of Barbara Cornwell.

Some landgirls were working at Bank's Farm during the 1939-45 war, and for some years afterwards. They left autographs on the walls of the oast house and the local lads appear to have appreciated their presence!

Urban archaeology!
Doorstep from the entrance to Ballards shop by garden gate of Hobbit's Rest. The two old cottages Hobbit's Rest and Lavender Cottage were enclosed within the shop and only revealed again when the shop front was demolished.
