The principal tenement, later Stepney Farm, was originally more extensive, some land and the barn had been sold by 1687. The Royal Oak is on the site of the barn associated with the tenement and Gladstone buildings on part of the land. The precise bounds of the individual manorial tenements are difficult to determine. The Handlye Common land, purchased from the Napp family, was the first land in Barcombe acquired by the Rogers family of Kingston. John Napp was the tenant of Sewells Farm and much of the land adjoins that tenement. Sale particulars of the estate make it clear that the exact location of the Camois Court tenement called Groveland was unknown in 1845 (39). The Stepney family, owners of a large tenement of the manor of Barcombe at Barcombe Cross as well as part of Handlye Common from 1709-1769, gave their name to the farm. Beams of a medieval hall house were incorporated into the fabric of the present house. The beams may have come from the messuage (dwelling) associated with the original tenement at Barcombe Cross although it is impossible to be certain that the cottage recorded on the tithe map was that dwelling. Stepnet Farm was later owned by the Catt family, owners of the Tide Mills at Bishopstone who also owned and ran Barcombe Mill in the later 19th century. |
