This land was originally held as part of a tenement that later evolved to become Stepney Farm (see TA933.5) The other holding created by the partition of the original tenement is now the site of Gladstone Buildings. The Royal Oak has not been the subject of a building survey. It would be interesting to establish whether any of the beams within the present inn are characteristic of a barn rather than a house. Does it represent an early barn conversion? The owner John Cheesman was the proprietor of the Cooksbridge brewery and George Adams was the innkeeper in 1840. |
