Lawn House and Cottage, Barcombe mills TA 1041

Lawn House and cottage form a complex multi-phase build sited north of Barcombe mills and east of Hayes Farm. Three ranges with rendered elevations, tiled and gabled roofs and with post-1800s proportions and details flank a range with a tiled roof hipped to the west and half-hipped east. This range is partitioned eccentrically between the two properties into which the complex has been divided. Where this abuts the north-eastern range a mid-tie is visible at ground floor, in the entrance hall to the northern property.

The roof over the central range is accessible from the attic room of the north-eastern range. It is of clasped side-purlin construction, rafters pegged at the apex, with mortices for struts in the principal rafters. There is wind-bracing from the principal rafters.

This roof has the constructional characteristics of a build of the late 1500s or early 1600s. The proportions indicate that it would have been floored, but it is unlikely to have stood alone. Without any evidence below eaves level, it is impossible to say at which side it was attached.

These notes have been compiled from survey reports prepared by Dr Annabelle Hughes. The original reports have been deposited in the Sussex Archaeological Society Library, Barbican House, Lewes, where they can be consulted by researchers.
