The farmhouse, now lost, was recorded on OS maps until at least 1911. It is curious that two farms with identical names survived in Barcombe well into the 20th century. The house depicted on an estate survey of 1798 does not appear ancient. However some medieval pottery was retrieved alongside the footpath that passes by the site which suggests that there was earlier settlement that pre-dated that house. Some of the land associated with the farm was enclosed from Handlye Common in 1574, hence the farm name. For the rest of the land in Barcombe owned by the Earl of Liverpool see P113/44, 1339; P113/44/1, TA 1033; P113/44/2, TA 200; P113/44/3, TA 432. |
