P113/70 2007 The Beeches and adjoining land

In sale particulars for the Beeches estate drawn up when it was sold in 1875, together with the adjoining land in the hands of the Egles family, the whole property was described as 'freehold' despite the fact that some of the land was undoubtedly copyhold(10). Although almost certainly in part a freehold of the manor of Barcombe no certain reference to it has been located in any manor court books. However one freehold tenement may relate to The Beeches a Messuage, barn, garden, orchard, close 1 acre near church - quit rent 1s 0d formerly in the hands of John Wood and which was taken into the hands of George Goring the lord of the manor in 1703. John Wood held other land associated with the Beeches estate (see P113/ 24 TA 1207). Elizabeth Egles was married to George Goring c1703 and it was possibly at that time that the property came into the hands of the Egles family.
