The Egles family owned the whole of the Beeches estate but in 1840 the principal house and some land was leased to George Wigney who was recorded as the owner on the tithe apportionment, the remaining portion is recorded here. The name Beeches appears to be a corruption of the surname Beecher (probably a former owner of some of the land) and has nothing to do with trees. In view of the recent discovery of the probable alignment of a Roman road to the east of this land the name Streatfield for part of one of the tenements may be significant. The element street when found in place-names is frequently associated with Roman roads. Holmbush now stands on Streatfield. The new grant of 1721, a narrow strip of land lying adjacent to a highway on which Beeches and Pump Cottage now stand, typifies a grant of manorial waste, of which there are many in Barcombe. Gabriel Egles also owned land on Markstakes Common (see P113/24/1 TA 190). |
