A group of tenements retained after the sale of the principal part of Holroyd's estate to George Grantham. The Vine family, who are the earliest recorded owners of the land by the mill, may have given their name to Vine Cottage (see TA 875). There was a dwelling on the land here before 1687. In 1825 the mill and cottage were described as 'lately erected'. The land at Barcombe Cross represents the residue of one of the group of major tenements of the manor of Barcombe purchased by John Holroyd to form the Barcombe Place estate. In 1836 part of the land was sold to B. Skinner (P113/60 TA 890), J C Cox (P113/20 TA 909) and Sir Charles Goring (P113/31/1 TA 799), the residue remained in the hands of John Holroyd until after 1840 and it was eventually purchased by George Grantham. |
