Fieldwalking: Chandlers Mead (Hilly Field) H197

Prehistoric
Seventeen pieces were collected here, of which a few may be Mesolithic, but the majority are likely to be of later prehistoric date, including toe of the three expedient end scrapers.

Pottery
One sherd of possible Late Bronze Age pottery, two pieces of Romano-British ware, 11 13th-14th C. sherds and one example of 18th-19th C. pottery were collected. Other discoveries include 10 Medieval and 6 Post-medieval tile fragments and a Lower Greensand rotary quern (undated).
C13th-14th. 241 sherds were recovered. The earliest is early/mid C13th, but most is mid C13th-mid 14th, perhaps with a few slightly later sherds. They are mainly sand tempered Ringmer cooking pots though there are a few glazed jugs too.
C17th. One piece of hard-fired earthenware.
C18th-19th. Eight examples of glazed red earthenwares were collected.

Tile C14th-16th. 123 pieces of later medieval to early post-medieval tile. C18th-19th. 14 pieces of Post-medieval tile (including one piece of mathematical tile).

Other finds include one piece of C13th-14th chimney pot, two pieces of Lower Greensand rotary quern (undated), ten pieces of Post-medieval brick (C18th-19th) and five clay pipe stems and one bowl fragment - all C19th.
From the quantity of C13th-14th pottery recovered from a relatively small area of the field it is most likely the site of a medieval farmstead.
