Fieldwalking: The Four Acres H291

Prehistoric
A total of 315 pieces of worked flint was recovered from this field, of which 170 pieces came from the transect walking, 116 from the total collection, and 29 pieces were collected randomly. The pieces are predominantly Mesolithic in date, and are mostly debitage, including soft hammer-struck flakes, blades and bladelets, with numerous fragments, including bladelet fragments, one of which may be a broken microlith. There are also a number of cores, core fragments and core rejuvenation pieces. The implements comprise nine scrapers, a small tranchet adze and a fragment from a tranchet adze. This material is probably from the same site that was discovered in the adjacent Saddlers Skirts.

Medieval
One pottery sherd of 11th-12th C. origin, 11 examples of certain 12th C. ware, 22 12th-13th C. sherds, 71 pieces of 13th-14th C. pot, two 15th-mid 16th C. sherds and six medieval tile fragments were recorded across the field (no obvious artefact concentrations discernible). Moderate manuring of the field would appear to have been carried-out during at least the mid 12th-14th C.

Post-medieval
Additional finds included four mid 16th-early 18th C. pottery sherds, 16 pieces of 18th-19th C. ware and a single 17th C. clay pipe segment.
