Test-pit site: Woodcock Cottage H356 |
Four test-pits excavated. Test-pit A produced one example of 13th-14th C. pottery, a sherd of mid 16th-early 18th C. origin, 24 pieces of 18th-19th C. pot, 25 Post-roman tile fragments and four 17th-19th C. clay pipe segments. The excavation of Test-pit B garnered 12 13th -14th C. pot sherds, one piece of 15th-mid 16th C. pottery, three mid 16th-early 18th C. sherds and 23 examples of 18th-19th C. pot. Ten Post-roman tile fragments, together with two 17th C. and one 18th C. clay pipe segments were also recovered. Three sherds of 13th-14th C. pottery, one piece of 15th-mid 16th C. ware, 16 mid 16th-early 18th C. sherds, 34 examples of 18th-19th C. pot, 40 Post-roman tile fragments and 25 17th-18th C. clay pipe segments were gleaned from Test-pit C. Test-pit D contained one sherd of 13th-14th C. pottery, three mid 16th-early 18th C. sherds, 67 pieces of 18th-19th C. pot, 84 Post-roman tile fragments, 17 17th-19th C. clay pipe segments and a whetstone of possible 19th C. origin. One piece of worked flint was found. Furthermore, the digging of a grave for a deceased family pet yielded 12 examples of 12th-early 13th C. pottery, 65 13th-14th C. pot sherds, one piece of 15th-mid 16th C. ware, three sherds assigned to the mid 16th-early 18th C., a single Post-roman tile fragment and three 18th C. clay pipe segments. One piece of worked flint was found. Additional 'surface finds' comprised a single sherd of 12th-early 13th C. pottery, 30 pieces of 13th-14th C. pot and two 17th C. clay pipe segments. The associated graphic demonstrates that the overwhelming majority of the Saxo-Norman and 13th-14th C. pottery sherds catalogued above were found across the western part of the investigated area. This clear concentration of relatively early artefacts contrasts strongly with the dominating presence of Post-medieval. wares recorded within the three easternmost test-pits excavated at the property (A, C and D). |
