Two Ways

Two Ways

Description

Two Ways comprises of two single storey parallel ranges with a central valley. The western range is hipped with an endshot to the north. The eastern range is comparatively modern. There is a large 2 flue stack towards the southern end of the western range with oversailing courses and a protruding string course about 12" up from present tiled roof. There is rendered brickwork to the western range with replacement windows.

Internally the western range is divided into three main living areas, with a step up to each of the end rooms. The roof is comparatively modern timber with a ridge board. There is an old well site to north-west of property.

A photograph c1920 shows an earlier tiled roof, sliding 'Yorkshire' sashes, and an extra end stack to the south, and two (?) pipes showing above the roof from some rear build. Hearsay that thatch preceded tiles is supported by a protruding string course on the main stack.

Conclusions

This is a late 18th century single-storey functional out-building of some kind associated with the farmhouse of Hewenstreat. It was presumably converted to living accomodation at the time that the adjacent brickworks were established in the early 19th century. The thatch was replaced with tile when it was desirable as 'modernisation'. Some twenty years ago the building was given insensitive 'up-dating', which replaced the older tiled roof and timber construction, windows, and possible rebuilding of fireplaces. This could also be when the rear range replaced whatever outbuildings then existed.

It is nevertheless, a rare survival of an 'historic' single-storey dwelling.
