Fieldwalking: Thornwell (Gate Field) H235

Prehistoric
A small group of 97 pieces of worked flint comprising both Mesolithic and later pieces. A significant proportion of the pieces are Mesolithic, predominantly soft and hard hammer-struck flakes, but also a retouched blade, and blade fragment, a blade core and a core rejuvenation flake. There were also three end scrapers, two of which are likely to be Mesolithic.

Romano-British
Two hundred and eleven pieces of pot and 12 tile fragments assigned to the Romano-British period were collected. A single tessera (date uncertain) was also discovered. These pieces were collected from the eastern side of the field in the area known as Thornwell on a map of 1634. By 1780 it had been incorporated into Gate Field.

Medieval
Other finds included five late 12th-13th C. sherds and seven examples of 13th-14th C. pottery.

Post-medieval
Thirty four 18th-19th C. pottery sherds, 56 Post-roman tile fragments and two Post-medieval clay pipe segments comprised the remainder of the collated assemblage. A possible broken gunflint was also recovered.
