Fieldwalking: Pimbles H244

Prehistoric
A total of 225 pieces of worked flint was recovered from this field, and was predominantly Mesolithic, with just a handful of later pieces. The assemblage comprises mostly debitage, with 76 soft hammer-struck flakes and 56 hard hammer-struck flakes, and a small number of blades and bladelets. There were eight flake cores, some of which had platform preparation, but all look Mesolithic, and a single bladelet core. A core rejuvenation flake and flanc de nucleus also indicate a Mesolithic flintworking strategy. The only tools in this assemblage were four end scrapers and a hollow scraper, all of which could be Mesolithic.

Romano-British
Ten sherds of pottery and a box flue fragment dating to the Romano-British period were recovered from the area of inspection.

Medieval
One 12th C. sherd and 165 pieces of 13th-14th C. pot were also recorded. These were collected from a concentrated area approx. 20 x 20 metres towards the western boundary of the field.

Post-medieval
Additional finds included a single example of mid 16th-early 18th C. pot, 23 sherds of 18th-19th C. pottery, 110 Post-medieval tile fragments, two later 18th C. clay pipe segments and a whetstone of possible 19th C. origin.

Miscellaneous
One piece of furnace/hearth lining (undated) and three slag nodules were collected.
