Fieldwalking: Sadler's Skirts H286

Prehistoric
The flintwork from Saddler's Skirts derived from a random collection in March 1999, and general surface collections in 2000/2001. A total of 481 pieces were collected and are almost entirely Mesolithic in date. The debitage includes flakes, blades and bladelets, with flakes and bladelet cores, core tablets and other core rejuvenation pieces, all typical of a Mesolithic flintworking technology. Implements include scrapers, piercers, fabricators and truncated blades. Microliths were being produced at this site, as apart from the bladelet fragments and cores there are a number of microburins, although no definite microliths were recovered. A tranchet adze and axe thinning/sharpening flake were also found. This concentration of Mesolithic material almost certainly marks the location of a longer stay camp.

Romano-British
Ten sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered.

Medieval
One hundred and fifty seven sherds assigned to the 11th-13th C., 290 examples of 13th-14th C. ware and 23 pieces of 15th-mid 16th C. pot were also collected from right across the area of investigation (no obvious spatial patterns discernible). The collated artefacts suggest a peak in activity during the mid 12th-early 14th C.

Post-medieval
Other finds included six mid 16th-early 18th C. and two 18th-19th C. pottery sherds, 13 Post-roman tile fragments and five Post-medieval clay pipe segments.

Coins
Fieldwalking in March 2000 at Sadler's Skirts, Hamsey, East Sussex recovered a silver penny of Edward I. The coin is of the New Coinage, Class 3c/d (1280-1), and was minted at Bristol.
